The Diocese of San Jose kicked off the Annual Diocesan Appeal (ADA) 2020 the weekend of February 8 – 9 with the release of a new video and a brochure, which highlight this year’s theme, “Encountering Christ – Faith In Action.”
Bishop Oscar Cantú said, “One of the constant themes of Pope Francis in his preaching and exhortations is our call to become ‘missionary disciples.’ That term has two distinct, but complementary, elements to it: following Christ as his disciples and being sent to witness to God’s love, truth, and beauty. So, too, does our 2020 theme bear these two important elements: encountering Christ and putting faith into action.”
This year’s goal is $6.7 million, with a projected parish rebate of $3 million. Ministries funded by the ADA include the Hispanic Apostolate, Office for Youth & Young Adults, Social Justice, Faith Formation and Catechist Development, Seminarian Education, the Institute for Leadership in Ministry, and Catholic School Tuition Assistance.
Once a parish meets its established goal, they receive a rebate of all additional funds. Last year, the Diocese was able to rebate more than $2.5 million to parishes and help with their unique needs and initiatives including: parish mission trips funding, church air conditioning installations and repairs, worship space renovations, stained glass repairs, Youth Ministry program assistance, Faith Formation program funding, establishing a building fund for future needs, hall kitchen remodels, youth retreats, restroom remodels, Adult Faith Formation, facilities upgrades, parking lot maintenance, landscaping upgrades, roof repairs, and replacement and parish debt reduction. In addition to the type of projects listed for 2019, parishes hope to use ADA 2020 rebates to fund the Village House Homeless Shelter, school building maintenance, parish youth scholarships for the Confirmation Retreat and Diocesan Youth Retreat, surveillance security systems, new parish hospitality facilities, and staffing for parish ministries.
In the ADA video, Bishop Cantú expresses his appreciation for those who support the ADA. “My gratitude to all of those who participate in the ADA, which shows a dedication to the mission of the Church that the important work of ministry that takes place across the Diocese is something that you are committed to participating in,” he says. “This is a way of putting our faith in action. Of course, we do that in many other ways, but this is a very concrete way that we participate in so many important ministries that take place across the Diocese. It is an act of faith. It is an act of service. And as the shepherd of this local Church, I simply want to say, thank you!” The full video can be viewed below.
Joe Naylor, Chief Development Officer for the Diocese of San Jose, added that the Stewardship & Development team looks forward to working with the Parish Teams to share the message of the ADA with their parishioners.
