The Pre-K and fourth grade students at Saint Lawrence Elementary and Middle School have loved their Friday Science Lab together.
The buddy classes worked together to build marshmallow houses with toothpicks and mini marshmallows. Their goal was to build a house sturdy enough to withstand the huff and puff of the “big bad wolf” which was a hair dryer dressed in felt ears and googly eyes.
This fun experiment took three weeks of activities to reach the big bad wolf test. The classes started with planning and outlining, followed by putting their plans into action with blocks and Legos, ending with the mini marshmallow and toothpick building.
When asked what her favorite part of the activity was, Pre-K Director Mrs. M said, “I loved watching the students as their houses were put to the test. If their house fell, they gathered back at their working station to re-create and adjust until they were ready to try again. It was so much fun to watch the fourth graders and Pre-K students bounce ideas off of each other with enthusiasm and excitement!”
The two classes meet every Friday for these hands-on labs, encouraging buddy learning and a fun atmosphere.
