Culminating our 20th anniversary year, the Institute for Leadership in Ministry celebrated the Class of 2018 on May 2 at the Cathedral Basilica of St. Joseph. With Bishop Patrick McGrath presiding, the graduates gathered with family, friends, parish staffs, alumni and current students for evening prayer and to celebrate the completion of the three-year formation program.
The thirty-eight graduates represent almost half of the parishes of the Diocese of San Jose. This group of individuals celebrated and supported each other during their time together. Starting out as strangers, they built strong friendships. During the final capstone course on discernment, they listened attentively to each other’s plans for ministry and could offer input and confirmation because they had come to know and appreciate the gifts of each classmate.
During these three years, many students have shared with me how much they have grown as a disciple of Christ and have come to a deeper appreciation of their roles and responsibilities as leaders within the local church.
Now the graduates are beginning their “next steps.” Two graduates have applied to the Permanent Deacon Formation Program; others have accepted greater responsibility in parish ministry. Still others are continuing to discern with their pastors where they are most needed.
There are so many people to thank at this time: Bishop McGrath for his ongoing support of the Institute; Rev. John Hurley, CSP, the Vicar for Evangelization; the pastors and parish staffs who encouraged and supported the graduates; the faculty who shared their knowledge and insights; and, finally the families of the graduates who supported them during their years of study.
It has been an honor to accompany the Class of 2018 on their journey. We thank them, send them forth, and look forward to the contributions they will continue to make throughout the Diocese of San Jose.
