Sixth graders at Saint Christopher School recently completed a language arts unit in which they read, researched, and wrote about the production of chocolate. The cornerstone of this unit was a novel, “The Bitter Side of Sweet” by Tara Sullivan. As the students quickly learned, chocolate has a dark backstory. Thousands of children in west Africa, who are forced to work on cacao plantations that are not fair trade certified, are the victims of child labor and brutal abuse.
In order to raise community awareness about this injustice, the sixth graders visited other classrooms to share their research projects with fellow students. Additionally, the sixth graders hosted a bake sale with goodies featuring fair trade chocolate. The proceeds were donated to Catholic Relief Services.
