With the Lunar New Year right around the corner, Saint Victor invited author Oliver Chin to share his work and experience as an author. Oliver Chin is the writer of 20 books including the highly popular “Tales of the Zodiac” series, in which a new book is published each Lunar New Year. Mr. Chin has increased the representation of Asian American characters in media since he founded Immedium, a San Francisco publisher of lively multicultural children’s picture books. This independent book publisher has published nearly 50 books since 2005, including the original stories of the “Octonauts” (hit animated TV series).
At an assembly with students in Kindergarten through fifth grade, Chin presented this year’s book, “The Year of The Dog” as well as “The Discovery of Ramen: The Asian Hall of Fame.”
Before reading “The Discovery of Ramen,” Mr. Chin asked the audience for suggestions on where to get the best ramen in town. Many hands shot up. Students were eager to share the name of their favorite ramen restaurant. Mr. Chin involved the audience by asking the students to make sound effects. During the question and answer portion of the presentation, one student asked Mr. Chin why he chose to write about ramen. Oliver Chin responded that in his research he was unable to find any book about ramen that was written in English. The book centered around characters that travel back in time to learn about the history of the popular soup.
After the presentation, students who purchased one of Mr. Chin’s books were invited to the library for a book signing. The author spoke briefly with each student as he signed his/her book. Students walked away from the experience with smiles and could not wait to show their personalized books to peers and parents. Oliver Chin’s visit will certainly be a highlight of this school year.
