Most Holy Trinity (MHT) School third-grade student Santiago is making a difference for those suffering from Alzheimer’s. Since 2011, Santiago has been part of Team Chala, a team named in memory of his maternal grandmother, in the San Jose Walk to End Alz, now the Silicon Valley Walk to End Alz.
Early this year, Santiago asked the event coordinator from the Northern California Alzheimer’s Association chapter, the person responsible for the annual Walk, if he could be a team captain, the designated leader and coordinator of the team. He received a very enthusiastic “yes” from the event coordinator and became the co-captain of Team Chala.
In addition to the annual Walks, Santiago is an active participant in other ALZ awareness events in San Jose. He has attended ALZ awareness events sponsored by the San Jose Giants and San Jose Earthquakes. He has also volunteered at numerous community events hosting information tables. At this year’s walk, Santiago was asked to participate in the opening ceremonies and represent the hope of a cure for Alzheimer’s by holding up a white flower, newly introduced this year nationwide as a symbol of the first ALZ survivor who has not yet be realized.
At a thank-you party for the team captains, Santiago was part of the set-up group and also distributed the gifts presented to top team fundraisers.
