After a summer of renovating, the new STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) Lab at Saint Catherine School is ready for students. On a Sunday after Mass, students, staff and their families gathered together for an Open House as pastor, Monsignor Jeronimo Gutierrez, blessed the new lab. The Open House and blessing were followed by a BBQ.
The lab includes 3D printers, adjustable tables on wheels, computers and video equipment, including a green screen, along with microscopes, measuring equipment and robotics materials. More resources will be added as needed. Students were eager to get in and use the newly renovated facility.
As part of science and math curriculum, students use the lab for various experiments and projects aligned with the Next Generation Science Standards. These focus on problem solving, collaborative work and innovation. Recently junior high students completed experiments and write-ups using the scientific method. Second graders made play dough using several different recipes, then compared which worked best and why. The scientists and engineers of tomorrow are testing their ideas today at Saint Catherine School.
