It has been a wonderful beginning to the school year at Saint Clare Elementary School with another author visit, courtesy of Hicklebee’s Bookstore in Willow Glen. Author Elizabeth Eulberg stopped by Saint Clare’s on September 12 to speak with grades 3 – 6. Her current book, “The Great Shelby Holmes,” is about a spunky nine-year-old girl who likes to solve crimes and mysteries in her Harlem neighborhood.
Eulberg talked about the many ways and the length of time it took to do research for her new book. She went on to share with the children some of her life stories and struggles she overcame including having dyslexia, being a remedial reader and being bullied at times as a child. Ms. Eulberg’s mentor is Dav Pilkey, author of “Captain Underpants.” He inspired and motivated her to become a writer. Ms. Eulberg also told the kids every story starts with “What if…?,” don’t be afraid of constructive criticism and many, many rewrites. Ideas for stories are like planting seeds which can take many months or even years to grow. Most important is not to give up.
Eulberg is also the author of seven young adult books including “Lonely Heart’s Club” and “Prom & Prejudice.” This is her first book geared towards younger readers.
