On August 9, Bishop Patrick J. McGrath presented Sister Suzanne Toolan, RSM, with the Benedictus Award. Toolan is the composer of the song “I Am the Bread of Life.” She was recognized for her outstanding contributions to the liturgy.
The Benedictus Award takes its name from the Gospel Canticle of Zachary, the Benedictus, which in Latin simply means “Blessed be God.”
In 1984, the Diocesan Liturgical Commission, with the endorsement of the Council of Priests and the encouragement and approval of the Bishop (DuMaine), initiated the conferral of the Beneditus Award to be given for achievement in fostering the liturgical renewal promulgated by the Second Vatican Council.
The Award can be given in three areas: Liturgical Education, Liturgical Music and Liturgical Arts.
