When the nominations were announced in early May for Broadway’s highest honor, there was celebrating at Bellarmine College Preparatory as alumnus Alex Brightman earned a Tony nomination in the category Best Performance by an Actor in a Leading Role in a Musical, for his role in School of Rock.
Brightman, who graduated from Bellarmine in 2005, has been working steadily in New York theatre for years, with such Broadway credits as Matilda, The Wiz, and Big Fish. This is his first Tony nomination, earned for the role made famous by actor Jack Black in the film version of School of Rock.
During his four years at Bellarmine, Brightman was a standout actor, having performed in such Bellarmine theatrical productions as The Laramie Project, Seven Ages of Bob, a show taken to the Edinburgh Fringe Festival; and Shakespeare’s Twelfth Night. Brightman was also a memorable member of Bellarmine’s improvisational comedy troupe, Sanguine Humours.
Another Bellarmine Theatre alumnus, Ryan Vasquez from the class of 2010, is currently performing in the Tony-nominated musical, Waitress.
The Tony Awards ceremony takes place June 12 in New York City.
