On November 20, Saint Christopher School gathered for their annual Thanksgiving Outreach prayer service. For over 15 years, the community has come together to collect donations for various service agencies. At the prayer service, agency representatives from nine outreach groups collect the generous donations and are given a blessing for the work that they do.
Each grade was given a wish list by an outreach agency and for three weeks, students gathered the requested items. This year’s agencies included Sacred Heart Community Services, Saint Christopher Diocesan Layette Program, Learning and Loving Educational Center, Hope Rehabilitation Center, Loaves and Fishes, City Team Ministries, InnVision, Family Supportive Housing, and Downtown Streets Team. The agencies are chosen by the parish Outreach Director, Nancy Melander.
At the prayer service, the students are thanked and hear first-hand accounts from agency representatives on how their donations will help the community. It was a powerful experience for both sides. One representative, moved by the generosity, told the students, “don’t ever change.” The prayer service ended with the hosting 5th grade students singing, “Lean On Me” to the community. It was a touching reminder that we are all here on Earth to help one another out. “It is my favorite prayer service of the year,” says Principal Corrine Buich, “it warms my heart to see the generosity of our community.”
