The Sacred Heart Education Center is located at the Sacred Heart of Jesus Church. Currently there are two programs dedicated to meet the needs of the community. The first program is the Homework Program that serves students in the community who attend the neighborhood schools, and nearby private schools. The program hours are 4 – 7 p.m., Monday through Thursday. The second level of adjunct programs offered are an English class for parents of the Homework Program and interested parishioners. Other classes to be offered are tutoring for citizenship class, and adults may request tutoring on Tuesdays and Thursday evenings. The address of the programs is 325 Willow St., San Jose, room 207 in the school.
The Center is funded by donations from the parish, a grant from the Catholic Community Foundation for specific needs of students and a Catholic Relief Service grant for nutrition. The program currently seeks donations for the following:
- Monetary donations for academic and summer school sessions
- Gift cards to Barnes and Noble, Target and Safeway
- Monetary donations are always a need for tutorial hours.
Community members can also volunteer to tutor in the programs. Participation requires fingerprints and a Safe Environment workshop. Adult tutors , retired teachers, individuals with experience in Math, and Language Arts are welcomed. High School students can fulfill service hours by assisting students in the program.
The Mateo Sheedy Sacred Heart Education Center is staffed by Betsy Preciado, a retired administrator and teacher. She ministers to the following, students in Education, Catechism, Youth, and Detention ministry. Mrs. Preciado’s background in Education, Bilingual Ed., and knowledge of Step-up to Writing program, and reading are a plus for the students.
Vanessa Hernandez, a very valued Lead Tutor, has been a part-time employee for many years. Her experience in Early childhood Education, Computer Skills, and Reading creates a strong foundation for the program.
The Sacred Heart Center Summer Program serviced 20 students with two paid part-time staff. It was a great 16 days. Students worked on their Homework packets, Math for all the grades. The program began the day with 30 minutes of reading, and writing in their journal. Lunch was provided by Martha’s Kitchen, which supports the students with snacks during the school year. After lunch, the students have art, manipulative math activities, board games, and computer programs. The program closes at 2 p.m. and “no one wants to go home.” The emphasis of the program was reading, math, and writing. The last day of the program was a field trip to the zoo. A well earned filed trip.
We are very grateful to our summer volunteers from Saint Clare School, Lincoln High School, Bellarmine College Prep and Notre Dame San Jose High School. During the year all high school students can fulfill service hours. The Santa Clara University Arrupe Program is our partnership for tutors. This program has also provided tutors to the center for over 10 years.
