Last year, the student group at Sacred Heart Nativity Schools, Leer es Poder (Reading is Power) was formed under the direction of English Language Arts teacher, Elise Hasty. This student-led group of voracious readers led the charge in renovating the school library. The students compiled a wishlist of books and wants list of “comfortable” library furniture. They held fundraisers to get their efforts started and were successful in raising enough money for a few books and a beanbag chair. What transpired following the formation of this student group and a visit from several school principals was transformative for the beloved library space. With the help of librarian, Mary Casey from Saint Lucy School, the shelves were filled to the brim with new books all to the group’s delight.
In addition to the book donations from Saint Lucy’s, donations were received from Most Holy Trinity, Saint Nicholas, Saint Mary’s Gilroy, Saint Francis Cabrini and Saint Chris. Members from Jesuit Connections Bay Area and teachers from Saint Justin’s school, performed community service and helped paint the walls.
We are so grateful for our Diocesan partners for their help in making the library space the favorite room in the whole school building! Leer es Poder!
