This year marks the 20th anniversary of the Institute for Leadership in Ministry. On Wednesday, October 11 at 7:30 p.m., the Diocese will come together for a Mass of Thanksgiving at the Cathedral Basilica of Saint Joseph in San Jose. It is hoped that alumni, faculty, pastors, pastoral teams, current students and all those who have supported the Institute throughout the years will gather for prayer. After the Mass, there will be a reception.
The ILM was originally established under Bishop Pierre DuMaine to meet the growing need for competent, trained leaders for the Diocese of San Jose. In 2002, the Diocesan Pastoral Plan identified three critical issues: lay leadership, youth and young adults, and the Catholic Social Teaching of the Church. The Institute became the primary vehicle for lay leadership development. Anne Grycz was the first director and served until 2010. Linda Cunha-Ricchio has served as director since that time.
Since its founding in 1997, more than 900 individuals have completed the program. The majority of them are still involved in active ministry today. During the years, the curriculum has continued to evolve adding content to enrich and improve on the original foundations.
We are grateful to Bishop McGrath for his ongoing support, to his predecessor, Bishop DuMaine, and to all who have contributed to the good work of the Institute. May God continue to bless the Institute this year and for many more to come!
