Sister Mary Paschal Elvin, PBVM, (baptismal name Gertrude Eleanor) entered eternal life on July 25, at the Presentation Motherhouse in San Francisco. In 1913 Sister Paschal was born in Vallejo, CA, and was a Sister of the Presentation for 88 years.
She was predeceased by her parents, Esther Gee, step-father, Frederick Elvin and her half-sister, Edna Elvin. Sister Paschal leaves devoted nephews, cousins and their families, as well as her loving Presentation Sisters and Associates.
Sister Paschal earned a B.A. in Latin from the San Francisco College for Women and an M.A. in education from the University of San Francisco.
Beginning with her first teaching assignment at Salesian School in San Francisco in 1932, Sister Paschal spent 56 years in the field of education teaching grades five to eight in elementary schools in San Francisco, San Jose, Los Angeles, San Lorenzo and Gilroy.
In 1963, Sister Paschal moved to Presentation High School, San Jose, where she taught Latin, English and religion. From 1969 to 1977, she taught English at West Valley Community College.
Following her retirement from formal education, and then in her eighties and nineties, Sister Paschal served in Saint Christopher Parish, San Jose, in a variety of roles, including as a member of the RCIA staff and moderator of the Over 50 Club.
In more recent years, she was involved in volunteer services and the ministry of prayer at Presentation Motherhouse.
