On October 7, Saint Catherine School Parent Teacher Guild (PTG), sponsored the 7th Annual Walk-a-thon. Three weeks before the event students began collecting pledges. Families could purchase track signs to cheer their students on. On the big day, pumpkins lined the track, lap cards were pinned to shirts and classes were assigned one-hour walking periods. Students walked and ran to an upbeat playlist, bracelet rounds and cheers by parent and grandparent volunteers. After the walking period students enjoyed snacks and cool down.
Top student runners hit the 90-lap mark during their one-hour period. Principal, Fabienne Esparza, walked with all the classes. By the end of the day she had walked 195 laps, approximately 12 miles.
PTG hopes to clear well over $50,000 through collected pledges, sponsors, and pumpkin and sign sales. The amount raised helps to bridge the gap between the actual cost of educating each student and the tuition charged. This fundraiser supports the school’s philosophy by promoting perseverance, healthy habits and community cooperation, along with 98% of all the money raised staying at the school to help educate students.
