The Jesuit Excellence Tour (JET) made its way to Cristo Rey San Jose on September presenting to the school’s first class of Juniors who are beginning the college search process. The JET is a series of recruitment events across the country that allow admissions teams from Jesuit colleges and universities to jointly recruit from targeted areas in the country. Colleges and universities represented included local schools such as Santa Clara University and University of San Francisco, as well as schools from across the country such as College of the Holy Cross, Loyola University New Orleans, Creighton University, St. Joseph’s University, Gonzaga University, and many more.

Todd Hicks, Cristo Rey San Jose’s Director of College Counseling , is responsible for building out the College Counseling program and encouraging Cristo Rey’s college-going culture. “My hope is that these encounters will help to motivate our students academically and with the activities and leadership opportunities we are providing. The generosity of spirit that surrounds the Cristo Rey community is inspiring!”

Students were very impressed with the colleges and universities represented at the JET, and enjoyed learning fun facts about each of the schools, for example that Creighton University in Nebraska has its own Apple Store on campus. However, the students were most inspired by the opportunities Jesuit colleges offer to foster change in their communities. “I want to go to a Jesuit college because not only do I want to continue the great education I have received here at Cristo Rey San Jose, but I also want to give back to my community after graduation, and a Jesuit college will help prepare me to do that,” says Maleena G; a junior at Cristo Rey San Jose.

Cristo Rey San Jose Jesuit High School provides students from underserved communities a rigorous college-prep education and a unique Work Study program in which students work one day per week at local businesses. Fees paid by companies such as Cisco, HP, Yahoo, Palo Alto Medical Foundation, Frank Rimerman + Co., and dozens of others help offset up to 50% of tuition costs.

Sponsored jointly by the California Province of the Society of Jesus and the Diocese of San Jose, Cristo Rey San Jose is one of 32 schools nationally that comprise the Cristo Rey Network. For more information, please visit www.cristoreysanjose.org.
