Saint Catherine School eighth graders made and launched rockets as part of physics lessons in science. Each student assembled a rocket, and calculated the weight and mass for use in determining the needed engine power. The students learned that there is more to putting a model together than just slapping on glue and paint. Several students added cameras to their rockets in an effort to document the flight; however, students had to balance the weight with the engine capacity in order for the vehicle to fly. After the assemblies were complete, their science teacher, Tadon Christopher, focused on safety for the launch day.
Wearing safety goggles each student stepped into the launch zone and set up his/her rocket. With the rocket ready to go, the student counted down to blast off. The various trajectories were tracked as students gathered data on their project. During the descent of each rocket, parachutes were deployed for safe landings. Only one rocket was not able to launch. This class activity is one of many that emphasize a focus on science, technology, engineering and math (STEM).
