The Year of the Canonization of Blessed Junipero Serra
By Audry Lynch
On June 19 at a Mass of Consecration at the Church of Ascension in Saratoga, the new officers of the Serra Club were blessed by Father Ernesto Orci, the club’s Chaplain. While Father Orci blessed the new officers, District Governor, Diana Seixas, of St. Thomas of Canterbury Church, installed the new officers and explained their duties. The new officers swore an oath to perform their described duties.
At Mass, Father Orci consecrated a chalice donated by Audry Lynch’s family in honor of her grandmother, Mary McKenna, who died in 1956. Instead of donating it to her church at the time of her death, the family put it in a closet. When Audry’s uncle discovered it recently in his home he sent it to the Lynches to use in their work with Serra. Father Orci blessed the chalice and asked the congregation to pray for Mary’s soul. He will use the chalice for his own private Serra work.
After Mass the Serrans walked to Worner Hall where they were treated to a Mexican lunch catered by Casa Vicky’s. After lunch the incoming President, Greg Lynch, told the members about some of his plans to celebrate and honor the Year of the Canonization of Blessed Serra. He said: “Serra was the number one evangelist of his time and Serra will be asking fellow Serrans to work in their parishes with their pastors to do something each month to increase the awareness of the need for vocations. We will emphasize prayer, youth and adult awareness, Eucharistic Adoration along with many other events.”
