St. Julie’s Tijuana Ministry annual garage sale has grown into a miraculous community event with many people helping others here and around the world. The Tijuana Ministry gathered discards from people in three parishes for this summer’s trip. Just as in the loaves and fishes story, we started by sharing what we had and ended up with far more than we started.
The communities of St. Julie Billiart, St. Simon, Church of the Resurrection and the neighborhood around St. Julie’s were asked to donate items they no longer needed or wanted. Then people from the many churches represented in the Tijuana ministry and the parishioners of St. Julies worked to set up and work the sale. We filled St. Julie’s Sullivan Center hall with several trailer loads of items and we encouraged everyone to help the poor by finding and buying new “treasures”.
Those discarded items were given new life, reused and repurposed! So many people’s eyes lit up with delight as they examined their new found treasures and toys. In addition, many of the things that were shared went to help others. Some items were saved to go to Tijuana with us. Many bags were filled with treasures that were sent to an orphanage in the Philippines. One shopper bought items to pass on to an immigrant family that had very little. Casa de Clara came and picked out some items for a new apartment for a former resident. A young man who had been collecting bottles and cans to raise money stopped by with his father and was inspired to donate all his earnings to the Tijuana Ministry.
The more than $10,000 collected from the sale will go towards building homes, and purchasing program supplies for the children and mothers during this year’s trip to Tijuana. But the true miracle is that these unwanted items brought us all together to put our faith into action. They are helping others in our parish, our neighborhood, the Diocese, and on to the Philippines, India and Mexico.
