On May 14, the Young Adult Ministry of St. Martin of Tours parish sponsored “Why Do Catholics Do That? – Young Adult Teaching Mass”. Members of other young adult ministries and young adults from all parishes in the diocese were invited to attend. The Mass was celebrated by St. Martin of Tours Parochial Vicar, Father Abe Antony, and the music was provided by one of our talented young adult vocalists, Earl Rivard. The liturgical ministers (lectors, ushers, greeters and Eucharistic ministers) were all young adults and represented various parishes from across our diocese.
During a “teaching Mass” or “instructional Mass” the priest catechizes about the various parts and aspects of the Mass. The goal of this Mass was to provide a better understanding of the liturgy which is at the heart and center of Christian life. Fr. Abe guided participants in a reflection on the ritual actions and history of the Mass. There was also an opportunity for those present to ask questions about the Mass during the Q&A homily. The event reflected the mission of the St. Martin of Tours Young Adult Ministry which is “to promote a deeper, continuously growing spirituality among young adults in order to make faith more meaningful and integrated in their everyday lives.”
About 60 people attended the event, including young professionals, married couples, singles, parents and children and catechumens from the St. Martin’s RCIA program. Following the liturgy, the Young Adult Ministry sponsored a pizza reception where fellowship continued. The Young Adult Ministry hopes to make this an annual collaborative event among young adult groups throughout the diocese.
