Reverend Deacon Salvador Enrique Alvarez, M.S.W., passed away on June 7, 2015 at home in San Jose, CA at the age of 74, after suffering from a long debilitating illness. He is survived by his wife, Sylvia, and 4 children and their spouses, Sabrina Gaughran (Gary), Sonia Alvarez-Oppus (Martin), Salvador C. Alvarez (Stacy), and Serena Alvarez (Noah Salzman) and 9 grandchildren: Olivia, Luna, Justo, Daniel, Sophia, Emma, Shaelyn, Siena, and Matthew, whom he lovingly referred to as the 49ers. His 4 siblings and spouses also survive him: Edward Alvarez (Nina), Raul Alvarez (Dora), Dora Martin (Will) and Armando Alvarez (Mercedes). Sal was preceded in death by his father, Armando Ramos Alvarez and his mother Enriqueta (Blanco) Alvarez.
Sal was born in Santa Maria, CA to Mexican immigrant farmworkers, Armando and Enriqueta Alvarez. Born with a clubfoot, his parents moved their family to Mountain View so he could be treated at Stanford Children’s Hospital. His parents later settled their family in San Jose. He graduated from James Lick High School in 1958. Sal graduated from San Jose State College in 1963; 1 of only 5 Mexican-American students while he attended. He was ordained a Permanent Deacon in 1979.
A Vigil was held at St. John Vianney Church, San Jose. The Funeral Mass was concelebrated by Bishop Patrick J. McGrath and Bishop Richard Garcia of the Diocese of Monterey on June 17, also at St. John Vianney Church, San Jose.
